What is a passing score?
A passing score is the number or proportion of questions that must be answered correctly to pass an exam and demonstrate the minimum level of competence for a career level. Receiving a higher score than the passing score is not an indication of more advanced knowledge and skill, nor is it an indication of better job performance. All individuals who pass the exam, regardless of their score, have demonstrated an acceptable, minimum level of knowledge. The purpose of the passing score is to communicate that the examinee possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to function competently as a Restaurant Professional, Restaurant Supervisor, or Restaurant Manager.
What is the difference between a Certificate of Completion and a professional certification?
A Certificate of Completion is issued to demonstrate that you have finished all the learning objectives for a specific course or group of courses and does not expire. A professional certification demonstrates mastery of a set of specific skills, knowledge and competencies regardless of how they were acquired. Professional certifications expire and require renewal in order to ensure their holders remain current masters in their field.

Why are the passing scores for each of the ServSuccess certification exams different?
The passing score for each of the ServSuccess certification exams is different for a variety of reasons. The job requirements at each career level are different, so the exam questions assessing those requirements are different. Additionally, the exams are administered to different populations who likely have increasing levels of industry experience, as well as other differences. A research study was conducted to identify the passing scores for each specific exam. This study involved a panel of industry experts, which reviewed each exam and set the minimum score an examinee must achieve to be considered “minimally qualified” to perform the job being assessed. Because each exam is different, the resulting passing scores across the exams will not be uniform.
Why are the passing scores for the ServSuccess certification exams higher than typical passing score for academic exams?
The passing scores for the ServSuccess certification exams were determined by a process utilizing the knowledge and experience of industry experts that defined minimal competence for each career level and evaluated the difficulty of each exam question. This process is different from determining degrees of proficiency (e.g., A, B, C, D, F) that is typical in academic exams.
